What is Chiropractic?

There's a lot to learn about what chiropractic is and how it's being used. Learn all about it on this page.
"Chiropractic is the Science, Art and Philosophy of the correction of misalignments of the spine and the resulting effect it has on the nervous system. Chiropractic interests itself in the laws of nature and health, without the use of unnatural external forces, medication, injections or other invasive interventions."
"Probably the coolest chiropractor! A young profesional- down to earth, direct & no bulshit sugarcoating. Thank you for your honest, great care!"
Lelde Strazdina
"Cobus is a very open guy, he is really interested in your well being. He takes the time to explore with you what you really need. Always a pleasure to visit him, even if you don't have a need for physical care!"
Rene Beerendonk
"Chiropractor Bosman is highly motivated, professional and knowledgeable. His patient care is excellent. Worth trusting with your health."

Introduction.

Chiropractic is focused on locating misalignments and movement abnormalities in the spine and pelvis, also known as subluxations. These frequently occurring subluxations, can be responsible for weakness, a state of dis-ease addition to being painful. They can diminish your quality of life, and left uncorrected, may be responsible for decreased health.

The underlying cause for these subluxations lies with our daily lifestyles in which physical, chemical, or emotional stressors are either too much, or too little.

Physical trauma like accidents and injuries as well as posture related complaints that often arise due to insufficient or incorrect movement. Often this is also a result of repetitive one-sided overload in work or sports, too much immobility or wrong lifting and bending techniques.

Environmental toxins or chemical stress arise from the wrong lifestyle habits such as smoking, alcohol drinking, medication, pesticides and pollution are major contributors.

Emotional stress such as that caused by relationship indifferences, financial concerns, loneliness, work pressure and burn-out.

Usually an isolated event alone is not to blame, but an accumulation of life’s incidence and accidents causing excess strain on the nervous system and if our nervous systems are unable to adapt in such a heightened stressful environment we develop areas of subluxation in our body. This can also lead to a variety of symptoms or disease states.

With the help of regular Chiropractic care, it is possible to locate these subluxations, and with specific, artful adjustments correct these areas of irregular tone. This in turn reduces stress in your nervous system by enhancing your brain function and when your brain functions better, it allows for the body to help itself better, healing you from inside-out.

The Philosophy, Art and Science of Chiropractic.

Philosophy of Chiropractic:

Chiropractic philosophy recognizes that the power that created the body can heal the body, as long as there is no nerve interference. The person as a biological organism/system is the focus, not the list of symptoms he/she may have. More so, the Chiropractor does not heal you, he/she is merely a co-facilitator with you, for your body to be put in the correct environment to heal itself.

The main purpose of the chiropractor is to reduce interference to your inborn, innate healing ability. Chiropractic philosophy tells us that a healthy, holistically maintained body and lifestyle, free of subluxations will enjoy a long and prosperous life. We are also of the belief that much of the medications and surgeries used in "modern" health care are overused, often unnecessary and harmful.

While Chiropractors are not against modern healthcare, we feel that lifestyle habits are more important to monitor and maintain in order to have a healthy, well connected body throughout life. Thus, the "holistic" lifestyle is that of looking at the "whole" picture of a person's life and lifestyle and approaching it accordingly.

Science of Chiropractic:

Chiropractic is based on the scientific and anatomical fact that the central nervous system (CNS) that includes your brain and spinal cord, initiate control of the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body via the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerve tissue which extends from the lower part of your brain down through your spinal column. Along the way smaller braids branch off from the cord and pass out from the spine between each of the movable vertebrae. These nerves divide further into microscopic nerve fibers which reaches each tissue, cell and organ of the body. Every human has an estimated 10 billion nerve cells and 60 trillion synapses sending and receiving messages through the spinal cord.

A normal healthy spine has 24 moveable vertebrae, each working as a team, with the one above and below it. A disc separates the vertebrae and acts like a shock absorber and a spacer for the nerve. It is important to value that the spine projects the spinal cord and the delicate nerve tissue and allows us to bend flex, twist and move freely without compromising the nerves. The spine surrounds and protects the nervous system. If the function of the spine is disrupted we refer to this as a vertebral subluxation complex. Subluxations puts pressure on the nervous system distorting the communication between the brain and the body, causing it to perform less optimally. This can also lead to a variety of symptoms or disease states.

Through focused examination of the spine the chiropractor locates and corrects these subluxations, taking pressure off the nervous system and ultimately restoring normal communication between the brain and the body. The body can once again self-heal, regulate and maintain health, performing optimally like before.

Art of Chiropractic:

Chiropractors master the "Art" of Chiropractic by analysing, detecting and correcting vertebral subluxation complexes. Adjustment describes the many ways and techniques of directed and controlled impulses to restore spinal segments to a more normal position and range of motion, aiding in increased flexibility, increased brain function and increased life energy. In order to better serve our community with Chiropractic we are putting in the hours of training and fine tuning our adjustment skills. We pride ourselves in delivering you the best Chiropractic care possible, each and every time.

A Chiropractor is an expert in improving health, not fighting off disease states or symptoms. This is all based on the idea that when your nervous system is free of interference, your body functions better. The skillful chiropractor searches with his/her hands for misalignments or subluxations in your spine and with his/her hands will deliver an artful adjustment that 'reboots' your nervous system.
